2. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: American literature owes a debt of gratitude to the rich cultural traditions of the Deep South. Sadly, the 2005 hurricane season has destroyed or severely impaired the libraries, literacy programs, and lives of writers and publishers in the region. FRANKLIN KNIGHT ON THE CARIBBEAN IN ATLANTIC & WORLD HISTORY: The Johns Hopkins Univ historian, renowned Caribbeanist and author of Slave Society in Cuba in the 19th Century and The Caribbean, among many other works, will lecture under sponsorship of the Virginia Commonwealth Univ History Department's Alexandrian Society, Department of African-American Studies, School of World Studies, and College of Humanities and Sciences, with funding from VCU's Student Government Association. 11. CONVERSATIONS WITH BLACK ARTS MOVEMENT POETS PROGRAM: English Department of Spelman College will present Sonia Sanchez and Amiri Baraka (Oct28, 7pm) at Sisters Chapel, Atlanta. Mr. Baraka and Ms. Sanchez will discuss their roles as cultural activists in the movement and as mentors to the emerging generations of poets and hip-hop artists, and their concerns about the role of the artist and the functionof art in society.
